18th Century Portrait of Eliza Poole

A charming portrait of Elizabeth Poole (b.1734) shown wearing a ribbon-tied bonnet and seated on a 1780s ‘Scotch’ needlework upholstered chair with brass nailing (similar to the one illustrated).
Inscribed verso: ‘This picture taken for me Eliza Poole/in the year 1798 then aged 64 and I have given it to my youngest daughter/Penelope’

Elizabeth Poole (nee Ruscombe) was born in Cannington, Somerset on March 1734 and baptised there on 1 April 1734 Her father Joseph Ruscombe was 30 and her mother Elizabeth Brice was 25. She married John Poole on 29 December 1762 at Cannington, Somerset. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters

One of their sons, who was also given a copy of this painting was Rev. John Poole of Enmore. Poole, a keen botanist, was known as ‘John the Divine’ and wrote ‘The Village School Improved’ in 1815

Penelope Poole born about 1781 married William Anstice in 1806 and became Penelope Anstice, she died in 1857 leaving the present painting to her descendants.
