Elsie de Wolfe (Lady Mendl, 1859-1950)) was the first Interior Decorator/Designer and is credited with inventing the phrase and the occupation. In 1913 she produced an influential book, The House of Good Taste, and her roster of famous clients included Vantderbilts, Morgans, Fricks and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. She swept away dark, gloomy furnishings and replaced them with light, fresh interiors, filled with painted furniture and strongly influenced by French taste
