Born in Scotland in 1770, Duncan Fife (as his name was then spelt) emigrated as a child with his family to Albany , New York. He became a cabinet-maker’s apprentice and, by 1791, was working in New York City, where he eventually had a large showroom and set of workrooms, shown in attached painting, and where the present sofa was very probably made. He retired at the age of seventy-seven in 1847 and died in 1854.
