Perhaps inspired by the huge success of Chu Chin Chow, which opened at His Majesty’s Theatre in 1916 and ran for an astonishing five years. This and the slightly earlier Diaghilev Ballet Russe production of Scheherazade had aroused a fascination in all things to do with the orient. A character from Chu Chin Chow is here illustrated.
