Chinese Export Painting of an Interior Scene attributed to Youqua
£4,350
A fine painting of a richly furnished interior with four male and female figures dining around a table, the blue curtain pulled back from the open doorway suggests the viewer is being granted a privileged glimpse into an intimate gathering and reveals a latticework balustrade and terrace overlooking a body of water.
Oil on canvas, presented in a bespoke gadroon-carved, ebonised and parcel-gilt frame
Youqua (Chinese, active circa 1840-1870)
Youqua established a studio at 34, Old Street, Canton and was one of the first artists to open a studio in Hong Kong, he was renowned for his port scenes and interior compositions such as the offered painting.
Having little opportunity to observe the Chinese at home, the western traders enjoyed having a fragment of the Chinese way of life permanently recorded in the paintings they purchased to take
West. These works often depicted themes of tea drinking, ladies at their toilet, card playing and other such pursuits.
