Carved Palm-Frond Uplighter attributed to Serge Roche

formed of gathered palm-fronds in carved and painted oak and with a unique foliate tripod base. Designed by Serge Roche (1898-1988) in the 1930s and produced in quantity made from plaster during his lifetime, this is the only period version of this palm uplighter recorded in hand-carved in wood. It is therefore conceivable that the present piece is, in fact, an early prototype for the later plaster versions – this would also explain the unique foliate tripod base which is very much in the style of Serge Roche but is not found on the mass-produced plaster versions, perhaps due to the fact that it would be impossible to produce with enough strength to support the light in plaster, and therefore the circular rocky bases were adopted for the plaster versions.
