Chinoiserie Pottery Garden Seat or Stand

in the form of an elaborately caparisoned, naturalistically glazed standing elephant, his howdah stand forming the flat surface

Height 61 cm (23.5 inches)
Width 68 cm (26.75 inches)
English, 19th century

Almost all the major Victorian pottery companies produced garden seats in the 19th century – Minton; Holdcroft; Copeland; Brown, Westmead & Moore; Wedgwood. Usually these were in an exotic revivalist style – Gout d’Egypte, Japonaiserie, Assyrian, and Chinoiserie, as in the offered example. As this piece is unmarked, it’s almost impossible to attribute it to any one company with any degree of certainty.
