Two similar pairs, of which this might be a surviving example, were on the staircase of Thomas Hope’s house, The Deepdene. In the watercolour (here illustrated), a pink-ground pair is the most obvious, but lurking behind them, a few steps lower, is another pair, possibly with a green ground
