English. Circa 1840

James Shoolbred, a linen-draper of Scottish descent, formed the partnership Shoolbred & Co. in 1814 and moved into premises in Tottenham Court Road in 1817. By 1840 he was in partnership with Cooke, and had moved into larger premises on Tottenham Court Road and was also dealing in furniture, as well as continuing with the drapery, upholstery and carpet business. This armchair, which dates from circa 1840, must be one of their earlier pieces of furniture. James died in 1862, and his sons continued to expand the business under the name of James Shoolbred & Co. Ltd.
