Bouillotte was a gambling card game invented in France in the 18th century, a version of Brelan. It became hugely popular during the revolution and into the 19th century, and special tables and lamps were produced to facilitate play late into the night, the lamps having adjustable shades that could be lowered as the candles burned down.
