Ferdinand Barbedienne, 1810-1892, (here shown in a drawing by Thomas Couture), son of a farmer from Calvados, started his career as a seller of wall-paper. In 1838 he went into partnership with Antoine Collas, 1795-1859, producing fine quality bronze replicas of famous sculpture. From 1843 they extended their output to include household objects, such as lamps.
