George II Parcel-Gilt Mahogany Overmantel Mirror

Height 89 cm / 35 inches
Width 126 cm / 49.5 inches
English. Circa 1740

of unusual form, the central arched plate flanked by two rectangular scallop-edged plates and contained within a rectangular mahogany and parcel-gilt frame the spandrels filled with gilt-wood palm fronds.

The two flanking plates probably pre-date the frame by some thirty years – mirror-plates were an expensive commodity and it was not uncommon for good quality plates to be re-used from earlier, out-dated frames.
