Pair of George III Mahogany Card or Side Tables
£14,500
A very fine, matched pair of George III mahogany card tables or side tables in the manner of William and John Linnell, each with a rectangular top of figured mahogany over a fluted frieze interrupted by paterae and raised on square, fluted, tapering legs. Both tables were almost certainly produced in the same workshop and at the same time, however one card table has a concertina action to the opening and the other a more conventional gate-leg action.
The waisted section at the top of the legs is typical of designs by Mayhew and Ince, and the same arrangement of fluting and oval and circular paterae appears, albeit in marquetry, in the friezes of the card-tables designed by John Linnell for the Duke of Northumberland and still at Alnwick Castle
A similar, single table, was sold at Michael Bowman Auctions, Newton Abbott, 6th October 2007 (£17,500)
A similar table (here illustrated was offered by Sotheby’s, London, 31 October 2017, lot 155.
