The fashion for Chinese wallpaper was significant in country house decoration in the middle of the 18th century, with many houses installing such exotic papers in Bed Chambers, Music Rooms and Drawing Rooms. The majority of Chinese wallpapers used depicted flora and fauna with birds, and more unusually figural wallpapers such as the present group. Probably the most well recorded example of comparable subject are those to be found in the Study at Saltram House (here illustrated).

These rare survivals were most probably rescued during the 19thC, as fashions changed, from a room decorated with Chinese wallpaper.
