A wonderful and large scale Italian 18th Century trompe l’oeil painting attributed to Antonio Mara, lo Scarpetta, depicting a mask, fruit, musical instruments and a vase before an engraving of a Spanish pointer, all on a faux bois ground. The engraving shown on the wall is Chien Courent (running hound) by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas and Jean Eric Rehn after the original by Jean-Baptiste Oudry (illustrated). ; Oil on canvas, presented in a painted frame

Active in Lombardy and especially in Bergamo, very little is known about Antonio Mara, other than he specialized in delicate still lifes, often with trompe-l’oeil effects against a wooden background.
