Large Japanese Lacquered Porcelain Charger

A large and unusual Japanese lacquered charger, of oval form decorated with a central panel surrounded by four further, lobed, lacquer panels and four circular vignettes on a feather-strewn brick-red ground. The combination of underglaze decoration combined with surface lacquer is particularly unusual. There is evidence of underglaze decoration beneath the lacquer suggesting that this 18th century charger was embellished with lacquer during the 19th century.
