Humphrey Hopper (1764 1844) was trained as a sculptor and mason. In the early 19th century he developed a line of plaster figures designed to hold lamps. The larger figures were sometimes intended to stand in niches, often especially incorporated by architects into their designs for that purpose.

George Bullock also produced similar plaster figural candlesticks.
