Mid 18th Century Wenge Veneered Table in the manner of Martin Schuhmacher
A fine wenge-veneered lamp or end table in the manner of Martin Schuhmacher of Ansbach, the circular wenge top with kingwood cross-banding, the frieze containing a single drawer and raised on three cabriole legs headed by finely chased gilt-bronze Bacchic masks and ending in gilt-bronze scroll and leaf sabots
Martin Schuhmacher appears in the records for the Ansbach court between 1720 and 1781. He produced an elaborate boulle writing cabinet and a fine group of marquetry furniture for Margrave Carl-Wilhelm-Friedrich von Brabdenburg-Ansbach (1729-1757), and also several pieces veneered in palisander , amaranth or purpleheart wood with fine gilt-bronze mounts as in the present piece. His work is extensively illustrated and discussed in Die Möbel der Residenz Ansbach published by Prestel in 1999
