Pair of Bavarian Marble Topped Walnut Commodes

£14,500

A rare pair of German commodes or chest of drawers of serpentine shape and with their original mottled violet and grey Sarrancolin marble tops, each with three long drawers with original, finely engraved gilded rococo lockplates and handles, the feather banded drawers retaining their 18th century marbled lining-paper.

Height 79 cm (31 inches )
Width 97 cm (38 inches)
Depth 56 cm (22 inches)
mid 18th century

It is rare in the German Pricipalities and Electorates to find veneered commodes with marble tops, most also having veneered or marquetry tops. It is likely that the tops were purchased, perhaps on Princely travels in France or Italy, and the commodes then made to support them on return to Germany. It is a sign of quality, and sophistication of design, that the three asymmetrical rococo lockplates are complementary on the two commodes and not all cast from the same template
