A Regency silkwork picture of Sadler’s Wells showing the Aquatic Theatre named after the immense water tank built beneath the stage and extending beyond which was filled with water from the adjacent New River. When the boards of the stage were removed, performances such as Siege of Gibraltar and Battle of the Nile could be set on real water
