A Scottish mahogany chest of drawers, the front with a deep bonnet drawer panelled as two drawers above two further long drawers; stamped MORISON & CO. EDINBURGH
At this time Morison & Co., one of Edinburgh’s leading cabinet-makers, was run by the partnership of William Robert Reid, and his brother John. Their father William Reid (d. 1895) had joined the cabinet-maker James Morison in 1847 and for many years after Morison’s death in 1862 had run the business. James and Mathew Morison of Edinburgh and Ayr’s most notable commission had been for Sir David Hunter-Blair at Blairquhan, 1823-5.
William Robert Reid lived at Launston Castle, Cramond, just outside Edinburgh, from 1902 to 1926. He left the castle and its collection in trust to the nation.
