Scottish Mahogany Cockpen Armchair

This prototype of chinoiserie chair was developed in mid-18th century Scotland and called after the village where this form of chair was made for the Earl of Dalhousie’s family pew in the Kirk there. Typically this type of chair has a concave seat, supported on splaying front legs, and a latticework back, all members being rounded instead of the typical square form preferred in England.  The model remained popular and was reproduced by Wheeler of Arncroach and Whytock and Reid of Edinburgh in the 20th century, when this example was made
