Rare American Folk-Art Drawing of a Lion

A naive picture of a lion standing on cliffs overlooking the sea, with a paddle-steamer in the distance, white on a black ground, set in a faux tortoiseshell frame.

Penmanship Was widely taught in boy’s schools, often using the Spencerian method (established by expert penman Platt Rogers Spencer in 1840), which transformed this important means of communication into an elaborate form of folk-art.
