Jan van Huysum, also spelt, as in the signature on the present watercolours van Huijsum, (1682-1749), came from a family of painters. His grandfather, also Jan, was expeditious at painting screens, doorways and vases, his father Justus and brother Jacob at painting flower pieces. Jan himself was also adept at flower pieces and landscapes, as well as smaller scale watercolour subjects.
