In the novel “Paul et Virginie” by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Paul and Virginie are raised together by their mothers on the island of Mauritius, almost as brother and sister. As they mature, their affection for each other deepens into love, leading to a tragic end. Virginie is sent to France for her education, and upon her return, she is caught in a shipwreck, refusing to leave her clothes behind to save herself. She drowns before Paul’s eyes, and Paul later dies of a broken heart.
