Two George II Rococo Ormolu Watch-Stands
one with a male flautist and lady with a fan, the second cast with a cockerel, an owl and amorini, one an infant Father Time with scythe and hour-glass
Height 35cm (13 3/4in) and 32cm (12 1/2in)
mid 18th century
A watch-stand of similar type, in the Manchester City Art Gallery, was exhibited in the Rococo exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum, May to September, 1984, Catalogue no. K7. In the catalogue entry, it says that several Birmingham-based brass-founders had designs for similar watch-stands in their pattern-books in the mid 18th century, and surmises that these were probably also made for export.
