Unusual Pair of American Walnut Chairs attributed to Gardner & Co.

An unusual pair of American side chairs each back and seat formed from a single sheet of shaped laminated wood pierced with holes, raised on turned legs

American, circa 1885

The firm of Gardner & Co., active 1863-1887, took out a patent in May 1872 for a three-ply veneer chair seat, and they exhibited their new production in the “Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition” of 1876 – the chairs are extremely similar to the present examples, and to one held in the Victoria & Albert Museum, here illustrated. Their retailers, Hitchin & Mabbett, advertised them as the strongest chairs available for their weight – they retailed at $3.25
