Philippe Julian (1919-1977) did extensive illustrations for an edition of Marcel Proust’s À la Recherche du Temps Perdu as well as illustrating works by Honoré de Balzac, Colette, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ronald Firbank and Oscar Wilde. It has not been possible to tie the present watercolour to any specific work and it may, of course, be an impression of Offenbach’s Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein
