A George II Painting on Glass of Elizabeth Gunning, Duchess of Hamilton, probably painted in China after the engraving by Richard Houston of Francis Cotes’ portrait, shown in a blue dress with lace collar and a rose in her décolletage, within a feigned oval and contained in its original 18th century ebonised frame with carved and sanded gilt-wood slip. The reverse bearing remnants of the trade label of Samuel Okey of Fleet Street, London.

Elizabeth Gunning, one of the legendary Gunning sisters, was presented at court with her sister Maria in 1750 and, by 1752, had married the 6th Duke of Hamilton. People stood on chairs at public events and even in church to catch a glimpse of these famous beauties.
