George III Giltwood Marginal Mirror

£2,900

A large George III gilt-wood marginal mirror or pier glass. The design allowing for it to be hung either horizontally or vertically as a pier glass. With a rectangular, mercurial silvered plate surrounded by a border of 14 border plates with beaded slips, all contained within a moulded frame with bead and leaf-carved detail. This mirror retains all of its original mercurial silvered plates, interestingly the central plate was slightly damaged in the early 19th and, as mirror plates were extremely precious and expensive, cunningly repaired with a fan shaped fillet inserted to one corner- see images
