The offered work is similar to other portraits by Samuel de Wilde (1748-1832) of well-known contemporary theatrical figures, usually shown in interiors, which he painted in his studio in Drury Lane having been employed by the printer John Bell (1745-1831) to produce a series of images of members of the “British Theatre” which ran from 1791 to 1795. in his magazine La Belle Assemblé
Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Anglo-Irish playwright and politician, he sat in the House of Commons from 1780 to 1812 and owned and ran the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
