Very Large and Important 18th Century Portuguese Armchair or Throne Chair
£8,900
A very large and imposing Portuguese open armchair or throne dating from the reign of Dom Joseph I, the cartouche shaped back with shell carved cresting and moulded frame leading down to the boldly carved, scrolled arms above the drop-in seat with shaped rails and raised on cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet. Upholstered in antique crimson silk velvet
This exceptional large scale late baroque armchair exemplifies the transition of decoration from the baroque tastes of the 17th century and early 18th century, and the rococo period of the 1750s and 1760s.
The offered chair bears striking similarities to the two thrones of the Throne Room of the Palácio de Mafra or the Palace of Mafra (illustrated),
