Antique Italian Carved Mecca-Gilt Console Table

£7,800

A Sicilian or Neapolitan carved mecca-gilt console table or side table, of imposing scale, the serpentine shaped rouge du Languedoc red marble top above a mecca-gilt base, the apron centred by a boldly carved central shell within the scrollwork apron and flanked by foliate swags, the four cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and husk pendants leading down to the foliate scroll feet and united by X-form stretchers formed of rock-work and centred by a shell within a cartouche formed of C scrolls and flowers

The use of silver-leaf gilding covered with a yellow-tinted lacquer in order to imitate gold leaf is typical of southern Italy, particularly Sicily and Naples.

The design of the offered table is closely related to those of Pierre Contant d’Ivry
