A Sicilian or Neapolitan carved mecca-gilt console table or side table, of imposing scale, the serpentine shaped rouge du Languedoc red marble top above a mecca-gilt base, the apron centred by a boldly carved central shell within the scrollwork apron and flanked by foliate swags, the four cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and husk pendants leading down to the foliate scroll feet and united by X-form stretchers formed of rock-work and centred by a shell within a cartouche formed of C scrolls and flowers
The use of silver-leaf gilding covered with a yellow-tinted lacquer in order to imitate gold leaf is typical of southern Italy, particularly Sicily and Naples.
